Transmedia dance performance TERRAS is an audiovisual narrative of kinetic episodes, exploring the effects of sound, visuals, light, space, and movement on human perception and emotion. Chrysanthi Badeka focuses on the interconnections of destruction and regeneration, contrasting the disruptive plasticity of the human body with natural phenomena and other organisms. Studying the algorithm as movement and combining choreography with programming and Virtual Reality, the interdisciplinary choreographer explores how computational systems can be integrated into contemporary dance, inviting the audience into a shared sensory experience.
By integrating digital media and various techniques (VR, algorithmic visualisations, 3D projection mapping), TERRAS fragmentises and paralyzes the human body and space, while other times it unifies physical, spatial and temporal meanings. The focus is oriented towards the subjective and internal stimulation of the viewer, rather than an objective and conscious response based on logical thinking. All elements activate the stage space, highlighting various aspects of the constructed landscape and scenes that emerge from within the body. In a dynamic interaction, spatial light and sound formations emerge and dissolve through the body and the visuality of the space. Light is transformed as an almost tangible material into an archetypal sculpture that, despite its abstract nature, allows for very personal associations. Matter acquires organicity through movement, the body becomes both transmitter and receiver, sound animates events and light interconnects the immaterial with matter, from the stardust of a supernova to the immortal jellyfish Turritopsis Dohrnii. The visualisation of natural phenomena strengthens the viewer’s connection with the wider scale of the universe, creating a communication between man and the universal space. The resulting forms of medial expression, combined with corporeality, visual experience and synesthetic sound, suggest a unique new dimension in choreography.
